shaping the world for difference

We all see the world in different ways, and we each have something unique to offer. No one recognizes this more than Understood – a national non-profit dedicated to shaping a world where millions of people who learn and think differently can thrive at home, at school, and at work. I was brought on to create digital-first content and experiences that would help make the world better designed for difference. Scroll to see a selection of these concepts.

the translator of difference

The biggest barriers that parents with kids who have learning and thinking differences face is lack of information. It's true that there's no roadmap for raising kids, but guidebooks do exist. Unfortunately, few of them are designed for families with kids who learn and think differently. This leaves families lost and alone, as they navigate challenges and biases.

So we decided to do something about it with the Translator of Difference.

The Understood community has thousands of families who've already been through it – the doubts, the questions, even the figuring it out. Could their

experiences help other families who are only just starting to figure it out?

The Translator of Difference collects these experiences so that the technology powering the translator can find patterns in the experiences already recorded and translate the sign or symptom that is causing a family confusion. Machines learn through data. So of course, the more data we get, the more accurate the translator will be. That's why, the Understood community is encouraged to keep donating their experiences if they're willing.

turn that worry around

Instagram can be a hotbed of mindless positivity, but it’s hard to be positive when you’re worried.

Google searches are inherently born out of doubts or worries, so we tracked what parents were searching for, as well as held focus groups to understand their fears. Then we worked with Understood's team of experts to turn these fears into positive and thoughtful affirmations.

Understood presents TURN THAT WORRY AROUND:

Beautiful Instagram-friendly GIFs that literally turn real families' real worries around.

what to do when

Boomers turn to YouTube for quick baking tutorials or for quick "fix-its"around the house, but approachable parenting content seems lacking. We figured that content that helps parents address concerns related to their kids’ learning and thinking differences should also be easily available.

Understood introduces WHAT TO DO WHEN

A series of short animated videos that give parents actionable advice they can put into practice

that very night. We worked closely with the animation house Scheme to bring these to life.
